Final Disappointment at Haddington 25-04-08

A mixed Blue and Black stripes team performed well at the Haddington tournament and were very unlucky to lose 1-0 to Dunbar in the final.

The boys started slowly, losing the first game 3-0 to Dunbar - however, it was 0-0 at half time and I think the team took the first game to gel with the two squads being thrown together. Following that game, however, victories followed against Longniddry, Tranent and Haddington to take us into the final.

The second game against Dunbar was more of an even game with play raging from end to end and only a single goal near the end separating the two sides. The boys were all very disappointed but should be proud of their efforts as they played some very good football to make it into the final.

BLUES HAMMER TRANENT 17-05-2008

MYS Blue Stripes 14 -v- 2 Tranent Juniors

Another easy victory, although Tranent performed well in the first 15-minute period and could have taken the lead before we got into our stride. Goals came from Aaran, Josh, Lewis, Euan, Liam and Blair (sorry if I've missed anyone - it's hard to keep track when you are reffing as well!).

GOALS KEEP FLYING IN 24-5-08

SETON BOYS 3 MYS BLACK STRIPES 14

Black Stripes made it 35 goals in three games with an emphatic victory at Port Seton. The boys got off to a flying start when a powerful long-range shot from Cammy Brown was too hot for the keeper to handle and went in the corner. Lloyd made it 2-0 with a cracker high into the net and Callum cleverly flicked in Lloyd's shot with his head to make it 3-0. Paul, Lloyd and Callum (with a right-foot finish after a lovely passing move) made it 6-0 after the first of the three 20-minute periods. Seth, who played the first 20 in goal with David injured, made an excellent save from Seton's only clear chance.

It was much tougher in the second 20, with Seton having an eighth man on the pitch and coming back strongly. They pulled one back almost immediately, then another as a shot squirmed under Callum, who played the 2nd 20 in goal. Seth made it 7-2 with a neat side-footed left-foot volley from Blair's good cross, but after a crazy goalmouth scramble, Seton pulled it back to 7-3. Youngstars re-organised and excellent play from Scott and Seth set up Cammy Brown for a cool finish to make it 8-3 after the 2nd 20.

Youngstars pulled away in the last 20 as Paul scored twice to complete a fine hat-trick and Callum notched his hat-trick too. Connor and Jack came close with powerful long-rangers but there were fewer chances for the regular defenders today, although much praise to Cammy Dunlop and Jason in particular for some great passes forward. Brandon didn't get onto the scoresheet either, but Scott nabbed a couple and Seth another late on.

GREAT COMEBACK AT LONGNIDDRY 18-5-08

LONGNIDDRY TOURNAMENT, 18-5-08

After a very disappointing start - and the Black Stripes' biggest defeat for more than a year - the boys fought back to play some lovely football and were unbeatenin thier last three games. Each of the following were straight 15-minute games....

DUNBAR 4 MYS BLACK STRIPES 0

A very dispiriting 15 minutes against pretty much the same boys we had beaten 3-2 in a full game just three weeks before. They were quicker, tougher and more skilful by far and totally overran us from the first minute. This game showed that it is not just about ability, but about having a positive attitude and believing in ourselves. It showed we need to work harder to win the ball all over the pitch and to follow the ball out after a first clearance from defence. If it hadn't been for David making some brave saves, this could have been even worse - but credit to Dunbar, who were brilliant.

MYS BLACKS 1 NORTH BERWICK 1

The boys responded magnificently to the thumping with a great performance, including some real commitment and great football. David made another brave save, but we took control and deserved to take the lead when Seth crashed a great shot off the bar from outside the box. We went ahead when great battling led to Seth lifting in a cross and Jack found space to knock the ball in at the far post. It looked like we had won but with the last touch of the match, a NB corner was headed goalwards and as Jack jumped to clear, the ball appeared to hit his arm and went into the top corner.

MYS BLACKS 2 SETON BOYS 1

We created bags of chances in this game but missed most of them, some because boys were glory-hunting and not playing in the simple pass. Paul gave us the lead with a nice left-foot finish but the missed chances gave Seton hope and with their only shot of the game, they equalised late on. We had some good fortune as Seth's cross from the right was blasted high into his own net by a Seton defender to give us a deserved, but in the end rather fortunate win.

MYS BLACKS 5 TRANENT JUNIORS

The boys saved the best till last as we swept aside Tranent. Paul scored a fine hat-trick, Blair poached a rebound at the far post and Seth scored the goal of hte day after some wonderful interplay with Paul and Lloyd. Jason and Lloyd also went close, while Connor and Cammy Dunlop kept it tight at the back. All credit to the boys for the brilliant fightback after a poor start.

Squad: David, Connor, Jason, Cameron D, Lloyd, Jack, Paul, Seth, Blair.

DAVID COMES OUT TO NAB A HAT-TRICK 17-5-08

ABERLADY COLTS 1 MYS BLACK STRIPES 12

We had 13 players in the squad today and every one played their part in a tremendous victory.

Aberlady Colts took on the fixtures of Tranent Colts after they dropped out of the legaue and many of their boys have only just started playing in regular games. With this is mind, we decided to mix things around today, allowing David a rare chance to play out of goal.

Cammy Brown played the first of three 20-minute periods in goal, after making some great saves during the warm-up. Blair started on the right and had an excellent first 20, hitting the post early on and then putting in some fine passes and crosses as Youngstars got a quick grip on the game. Lloyd opened the scoring when he ran clear to squeeze the ball in by the post, then Cameron Dunlop broke his long scoring drought when he poked home a loose ball from close range. Cameron could have had a second when he ran onto Blair's pass to hit a fine cross-shot which might just have crept in at the far post before David slid in to make sure.
Jack made it 4-0 before the first break as his long shot sneaked in.

Aberlady brought on an additional player to try to even things up, but with Callum taking over in goal, Youngstars continued to pile on the pressure. Jason smacked the ball in from close-range from an excellent corner - one of many by Cammy Brown - to make it 5-0 and a powerful long-range shot from Paul cannoned in to make it six. We missed a penalty when Cameron Dunlop smacked his kick off the bar, but the goals kept coming. Seth swept the ball home after great work from Scott, who then scored from a tight angle before Brandon made it nine. David saw a shot shake the bar, before following up the rebound to score with his left foot to make it 10-0.

With nine Aberlady players now on the park, Youngstars found it hard to find space in the last 20 minutes and the home team got a deserved goal back as Seth - who had taken over in goal - was wrong-footed by a deflection. Youngstars then won a series of corners and these led to two more goals as Callum's low shot sneaked in before David completed his hat-trick with a neat piece of skill. Connor was pushed up front for the last few minutes but shot narrowly wide from his only real chance. Well done to all the boys for working as a team and holding their positions well.

YOUNGSTARS COME THROUGH IN THE END 10-5-08

MYS BLACK STRIPES 9 HADDINGTON 2

Another slow start and storming finish from Youngstars, who ran out comfortable winners in the end. Early on, the boys struggled to get the tackles in and Haddington broke free to take the lead with a well-placed shot into the corner.

Like the last game against North Berwick, we hit back straight away. Seth placed a precise shot against the post but Jack knocked in the rebound.

It was 1-1 at the end of the first of three 20-minute periods and it took Youngstars a while to get ahead, with the Haddington keeper making some great saves, helped by some less-than-brilliant finishing from the boys! Finally, we went ahead when Seth's shot squirmed under the keeper and Callum knocked the ball in from very close range. When the keeper blocked another shot from Seth soon after, Callum knocked the rebound in again.

Haddington broke away to pull it back to 3-2, but Lloyd poked in a shot after a scramble to make it 4-2 at the end of the second period.

In the last 20, Youngstars stormed clear, with Seth setting up two more goals for Brandon and Paul before Jason - the player of the week - came on up font to make it 7-2. A deflected shot from Lloyd made it 8-2 and the scoring was completed by a delighted Blair, who whacked in a shot from a tight angle.
