Fine win in tough conditions 25-10-08

MYS Blue Stripes 7 -v- 2 Longniddry Villa

This game was played in terrible conditions with the wind so strong that the ball would not stay on the centre spot for the kick off's! Both teams deserve credit for trying to play any sort of proper football and our boys in particular put in a terrific second half performance especially considering the conditions.

MYS started with the wind at their backs but really struggled to turn this into any sort of advantage as it was all too easy for passes to be over hit and out of the park. Despite this we managed to get ourselves 2-0 ahead at half time. Rather than finding themselves under pressure playing into the wind in the second half the boys started to play good passing football and actually played much better into the wind, keeping the ball down and working hard for each other. The second half saw us run out worthy winners with both some fine goals and strong defending. Ross "the cat" McGuire also pulled off a fantastic flying save near the end despite having had very little to do in the match before this, the sign of a good 'keeper!

Well done boys!

Goals came from Blair, Aarran C, Euan and Josh.

BLACKS GAME ABANDONED 26-10-2008

MYS BLACKS 1 BONNYRIGG ROSE 0 (MATCH ABANDONED)

After two blank weeks, things looked bleak as the rain poured and the wind gusted until late on Saturday. However, Sunday dawned bright and dry and the pitch was in great condition considering the gruesome weather of the previous week.

It was still very windy and we agreed to play 4 x 15 minutes instead of 2 x 30 as it was felt it would be unfair on one team to have to defend for the entire last 30 minutes against the wind.

Bonnyrigg played some neat football and forced a couple of corners, but failed to trouble Cammy Brown who is replacing David in goal for the time being. Connor was impressive in the first 15 (after one crazy back-heel!) and made some strong runs forward to support the attack and almost got his head on the end of a great corner by Lloyd. Callum and Jack also played well down the wings and Lloyd got stuck in as we got on top of the game. The best chance of the first 15 came when Seth blasted in a strong shot which their keeper saved well, then clawed away as it looked as if it was going to drop into the goal behind him.

In the second 15, the Bonnyrigg keeper again saved well from Lloyd and Callum, then came out to clear as Paul ran through. Youngstars took the lead when another great corner from Lloyd was forced over the line from close range by Jack. But by now, the rain and wind had blown back in and we were forced to stop the game as the rain started driving horizontally across the pitch.

There was no way we could start again as the weather blowing in was foul - so thanks to everyone who helped take down the goals and clear away in such grim conditons!

The abandonment was a real shame as it was looking like a terrific, tight game and Youngstars were playing very well.

Squad: Cammy Brown, Connor, Jason, Jack, Lloyd, Callum, Seth, Paul, David, Blair, Cameron D, Brandon.

Fine display by Blue Stripes 18-10-08

MYS Blue Stripes 11 -v- 0 Tranent Juniors

Another one sided affair against this team however, despite having all of the ball, it took the boys a while to get the goals going, with the scoreline at 1-0 long into the first half. Once we did get a couple though the goals started flowing freely especially after the break with the wind at our backs. Despite the fact that we were always in control the boys did not get greedy with the ball and, instead produced one of their best passing displays of the season. Goals came from Josh, Blair, Matthew, Aarran and David Johnstone who was helping us out as we were short handed, grabbed a hat trick.

Blue Stripes edged out by Dunbar 4-10-08

Dunbar 5 -v- 3 MYS Blue Stripes

A cracking match and one which the boys deserve great credit for despite narrowly losing out in the end.

The match was played in less than perfect conditions with a strong wind and driving rain however the players on both sides did their best to keep the ball down and play good football. We deservedly took the lead through a long range Aarran Currie shot and then should have went further ahead after dominating possession but just couldnt find the net. Dunbar punished us for this and managed to equalise just before half time.

The second half saw Dunbar come into the game more with the wind at their backs and they managed to use this to their advantage scoring 2 good goals from distance. Credit to our players though as they continued to battle hard and pulled a goal back before a couple of defensive lapses saw us hand Dunbar back their 2 goal advantage. Despite this the boys kept their heads up and hit both the post and crossbar as well as forcing some good save from the keeper. Our own keeper Ross also deserves special mention for pulling off some fantastic saves as Dunbar were using the strong wind to hit shots at every opportunity.

All in all we were unlucky to lose in a match which we played extremely well in.

END-TO-END THRILLER! 5-10-2008

MYS BLACKS 6 EASTHOUSES 5

We were due to play Cavalry Park this week, but they have dropped down a division after several heavy defeats - and so we took on Easthouses, who were due to play Craigroyston, another team who have left the Maradona league (not sure why).

The boys were asked to get stuck in from the very start and they certainly did this, taking the lead with barely a minute gone. Jack made great progress down the right and crossed well for Seth to sweep a shot high into the net. Seth had another good effort tipped over by the keeper, but Easthouses came back strongly and scored an equaliser before their striker coolly finished to give them a 2-1 lead.

Youngstars hit back with a brilliant goal as Lloyd released Cammy Brown on the left and Seth dived in to head home his excellent cross. This gave us more confidence and a cross-shot from Lloyd took a big deflection off an unlucky defender and sailed high into the net.

We went in 3-2 ahead at half-time and it was pleasing to see how well Cammy Dunlop and Jason moved wide and passed the ball out of defence. Cammy was one of the star performers today, with some stromg tackling and passing.

It was hard to keep track of the second half as the goals flew in, but every time we looked like pushing ahead, we were pulled back. Easthouses equalised, but Callum put us ahead with a cool finish after Lloyd hit the bar. The visitors pulled itback to 4-4 before Blair scored a fantatsic goal, beating a defender and smashing the ball just inside the post to put us 5-4 up.

We could have got a bit of a breathing-space when Callum hit the bar and we had several more shots on goal before Easthouses broke quickly and made it 5-5. Then close to the end, Lloyd drove the ball home in a crowded area to give us a deserved and much-needed victory.

Although we won through today, as a team we need to show some real steel when the going gets tough and not allow teams to repeatedly get back in the game. We also need to work on looking up to find a team-mate rather than just hoofing the ball without looking as this just gives possession away.

Squad: David, Cameron D, Jason, Jack, Lloyd, Callum, Seth, Blair, Cameron B, Brandon.

SPARTANS BLOW BLACKS AWAY, 29-9-2008

MYS BLACKS 2 SPARTANS 6

Youngstars were well-beaten by a confident and well-organised team who passed the ball really well and worked together as a unit in both defence and attack.

We lost an early goal but came back into the game and were disappointed to lose a second when a Spartans player peeled off at the back post to volley home a deep corner. There was hope when we pulled it back to 2-1 after Seth set up Lloyd whose shot took a deflection to wrong-foot the keeper.

If we had gone in just 2-1 down, we would have had a great chance, but we conceded a silly goal immediately before half-time, missing several opportunities to clear before a shot squirmed beyond David and inside the post.

The game was effectively over just after half-time when more poor marking at the back post saw Spartans make it 4-1. Then a strong shot from the edge of the box made it 5-1 as our heads dropped.

Jason put in a brilliant shift at the back and was the clear man of the match and Connor also did well for the resat of the game after an emergency call for a pair of boots that fitted him! We threw Jack up front for a bit of physical presence and he came close to pulling one back after a good run. Lloyd and Callum also had good opportunities but too often we tried to pass the ball into goal instead of having a blast when a chance opened up.

It was 6-1 when a high shot was too hot for David to handle, but we got a deserved goal back when Lloyd hammered in after a penalty box scramble.

Squad: David, Jason, Connor, Jack, Lloyd, Callum, Seth, Cameron Dunlop, Cameron Brown, Blair.
